Battery Recycling Program
23 Jun 2010

In response to increasing community and government concern, the ARMB provides a battery recycling service for dry cell batteries. Batteries contain a range of environmentally hazardous chemicals including cadmium, mercury, zinc and nickel, all of which are toxic in high concentration. In particular, cadmium is a major pollutant in soil where it is absorbed by plants and enters the food chain.

By recycling batteries, you'll help reduce the release of toxic chemicals associated with their disposal.

What type of batteries can be recycled?
The dry cell batteries can be classified into two major categories:

Primary batteries:
These are non-rechargeable and are commonly alkaline batteries with zinc and manganese chemistry.

Secondary batteries:
These are rechargeable and are usually nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride or lithium ion, which can be identified by the following symbols:

NiCd or NC for Nickel Cadmium
NiMH or NH for Nickel Metal Hydride
Li Ion for Lithium Ion

Secondary batteries are commonly found in:

  • Cordless phones
  • Cordless drills
  • Mobile phones
  • Laptops and PCs
  • Shavers
  • Video cameras

To take advantage of the battery recycling service, drop your batteries off to the Buller Community Centre - there are two collection boxes, located in the Post Office and one at Reception.

Also please be reminded that printer cartridge recycling is also provided to stakeholders free of charge. There is a box located in the Post Office for you to drop off your used cartridges.

For further information, or if you wish to get involved with your own recycling program, contact the ARMB on the details below.
