Mt Buller Sculpture Award
The Mt Buller Sculpture Award will create Australia's first mountain-top Sculpture Park. The biennial Award is designed to develop the Mt Buller Sculpture Park in and around the Mt Buller alpine village in north-eastern Victoria.
Over the next decade and beyond, the Award-winning sculptures will be exhibited in perpetuity in the beautiful mountain landscape of Mt Buller. It is envisaged that the Mt Buller Sculpture Park will join the network of great international sculpture parks around the world.
The sculpture will be set outdoors in the mountain terrain of alpine wild flowers in summer, and the majestic snow covered ranges in winter: visitors will have the opportunity to experience the work in vastly different conditions in the same landscape.
The project also includes the Mt Buller Sculpture Exhibition, a survey show of the finalists from each Mt Buller Sculpture Award.
Mt Buller is Australia's best known and most loved winter and summer alpine destination. It is the most accessible alpine resort in Australia, and offers spectacular views, clean mountain air and a cool summer climate.
The summit of Mt Buller rises to an altitude of 1,804 metres above sea level, whilst the Mt Buller village stands at a height of 1,600 metres and is located 240 kms from Melbourne.
Mt Buller Sculpture Award and Exhibition
Australian and international contemporary sculptors are eligible to enter the inaugural $100,000 acquisitive Mt Buller Sculpture Award and Exhibition.
The acquisitive Award and Exhibition will be staged biennially. An Exhibition of the 20 finalist sculptures will be presented on Mt Buller during the summer and autumn period. Visitors to the Mt Buller Sculpture Exhibition will be assisted by a brochure and map of the Exhibition, and each work will be identified by a plaque. The inaugural Exhibition will be open to the public from Saturday 15 December 2012. The Judge for the inaugural Award is Doug Hall AM, who will select the finalists and the Award recipient.
Doug Hall was the Australian Commissioner for the Venice Biennale in 2009 and 2011, and director of the Queensland Art Gallery/GOMA from 1987 to 2007.
The Award-winning sculptures will be installed on the mountain in perpetuity. The long-term sites for the Award-winning sculptures will be determined following the announcement of the Award recipient.
In addition the Mt Buller People's Choice Prize of $10,000, sponsored by Foodworks, will be awarded to the sculptor of the work voted the most popular by the visitors to the five-month long exhibition. Visitors will be encouraged to vote for their favourite work after visiting the Mt Buller Sculpture Exhibition. Visitors who vote for the People's Choice Prize will be eligible to win a weekend summer holiday for their family at Mt Buller.
