Driving in your own car or a hire car is a great way to get to Mt Buller. It's only a short 3-hour drive from Melbourne via the Hume Highway or Maroondah Highway, and the scenery on the way is well worth taking your time to see and enjoy.
No matter which route you take from Melbourne to Mt Buller you will eventually come to Mansfield - the closest major town to the Resort. Pass through Mansfield and follow the signs to Mt Buller. Unlike winter, entry to the Resort is free throughout smmer. You can also drive your car all the way to the Village, although there are still parking restrictions in place around the Village.
From Melbourne, there are a number of routes you can take - the Hume Highway or the Maroondah Highway will take you on an amazing journey through the Victorian country. Combine your trip to Mt Buller with one of these fabulous driving routes:
A wine romance Depart: Melbourne-Yarra Valley-Healesville-Alexandra-Mansfield-Mt Buller. Drive time: 3.45 hours. From Melbourne, leave the traffic lights behind and head for the hills. Enjoy a relaxed motoring experience along rolling country roads, through the vineyards and towns of the Yarra Valley and Healesville region. Visit cellar doors and sample award-winning wines and new varietals. When you reach Mt Buller, take a leisurely tour of the Village before settling in to watch the sunset with a glass of Victoria's finest.
Cool Wines Depart: Mt Buller-Mansfield-Whitfield-Mansfield-Mt Buller Drive time: 3 hours. Take the ‘Cool Wines' loop and discover the cool climate wines and warm hospitality of the High Country. Visit cellar doors nestled in the foothills of Mt Buller, before motoring through beautiful winding roads to the King Valley where plantings large and small invite visitors to sample their wares. On your return to Mt Buller, shout your designated driver a cool drink and settle in for an evening of fine dining and travel tales amongst friends.
Kelly Country Depart: Mt Buller-Mansfield-Benalla-Glenrowan- Whitfield-Mansfield-Mt Buller. Drive time: 4 hours (with optional Beechworth extension 1.25 hours). Immerse yourself in the life of Australia's most infamous bushranger, Ned Kelly. Visit the museums, monuments, courthouses, lock-ups, hideouts and cemeteries still ringing with the horses' hoofs, shouts and gunshots of Kelly's bushranging days. Many towns offer maps and guided tours of significant sites. There will be plenty to talk about when you return for dinner at one of Mt Buller's renowned eateries.
