how do i get to mt buller?

*permission to travel, products and services are subject to change for 2021 season due to COVID-19 restrictions. Check the guidelines here.

If you are driving remember the following:

  • Buy your resort entry ticket online by midnight prior to arrival
  • Print your pass and display it on your dash, then proceed to resort entry

Mt Buller is just 248kms north-east of Melbourne via Mansfield.  There are a few different routes you can take from Melbourne:

  • Plenty Rd via Whittlesea and Yea

  • Via the Hume Hwy to Tallarook and Yea

  • Via the Maroondah Hwy to Yarra Glen and Yea

To get here via the most direct route using Google Maps and GPS, it is best to set your destination to Yea, then once you are in Yea set it for Mansfield, then Mt Buller from Mansfield. Click here to view the map.

Please be aware that wildlife is often seen on the Mt Buller Road, mostly around the Merrijig, Sawmill Settlement and Mirimbah areas. Kangaroos, wallabies, deer, wombats and other animals can be on and around the road. Drive with care, especially during dusk, nighttime and early morning.

There is no fuel available at Mt Buller so it is a good idea to fill up in Mansfield before driving the last leg to the resort. If driving a diesel vehicle you should use alpine mix diesel which is available from the pump at most service stations in Mansfield.

Wheel Chains

Day Visitors

Depending on snow and road conditions day visitors may be required to carry chains. You will need to check the daily declaration on the Mt Buller Live App or the website before you arrive. Click here to check the declaration.

Overnight / Village Access Visitors

All vehicles staying accessing the Mt Buller Village or staying overnight in the resort MUST carry wheel chains by law.

NOTE - a number of cars are unable to fit chains in accordance with their user manual, plus some tyre sizes may be inappropriate for snow chains (wide and/or low profile tyres are often difficult to fit).

  • Please check your vehicle manufacturers guidelines before hiring chains.
  • To ensure rental shops have the suitable chain size for your tyres it is always best to call ahead and check availability.
  • Alternative transport options to the resort are also available.

Trailers / caravans cannot be towed behind vehicles when the road conditions require wheel chains to be fitted.

Click here for the list of approved tyres for Mt Buller Village access for 4WD vehicles.

Resort Entry and Parking Fees

  • Pre-purchasing online saves time and money - CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE ONLINE AND SAVE! (Must be bought by midnight the night before arrival)

  • When you arrive at the base of Mt Buller, you will need to stop at the resort entry gate. You will pay resort entry and parking fees here which will vary depending on the length of your stay. These fees go towards delivering essential services on the mountain. Check the top of this page for pricing.

  • The Resort Entry point is staffed 7am-9pm Monday-Thursday, 7am-midnight Friday and 7am-10pm Saturday and Sunday. If you arrive outside of these times, follow the signs up the mountain and park where indicated, then during office hours you can drop into Alpine Central to pay.

  • There is parking available at the Mirimbah Riverside car park just before the Resort Entry gates for $8 per day, or $48 per week payable on exiting the car park

Day Visitors

  • Mt Buller has eleven car parking areas ranging from parks at 1.5km below the Mt Buller Village to parking at the Mirimbah gate at the base of the mountain. The time that you arrive at the mountain and the volume of other visitors will dictate where on the mountain you will be directed to park. At all locations there is a shuttle service available and depending on which park there can be a short or longer walk to the shuttle service.  There is no undercover area at any of the car parks so visitors are advised to check for weather reports and plan accordingly
  • Once you enter the resort our parking team will direct you to the next available park.

  • There are no extra fees for parking for the day.

On-mountain carparks provide access to the Horse Hill Snowplay Park, Celia’s Cafe and the Northside Express Chairlift. From here you can either take the chairlift up to the ski slopes or ride the free carpark shuttle up to the Mt Buller Village.

Overnight Visitors

  • Parking for overnight visitors is located approximately 1.5km below the Village. Once you reach the car parks you will be met by an attendant who will advise where you are to park.

  • There are additional parking fees for overnight visitors, which you can pay online here, or at Resort Entry. Check the top of this page for pricing.

Accessing the Village and snowfields

  • On arrival at the Mt Buller car parks you will transfer to ride shares that take you straight to your accommodation in the Mt Buller Village. NOTE: Only authorised vehicles are permitted to drive into the Mt Buller Village.

  • There are additional fees for ride shares, which you can pay online here, or at Resort Entry, or directly to the driver. Check the top of this page for pricing.

  • Alternatively private taxi services are able to provide transfers at a rate set by the operator.
  • Orcoda - Mt Buller Operate the Day Car Park Shuttles that are fully wheelchair accessible, in addition to this overnight visitors can book a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) valet taxi via the Mt Buller Transport App, Web or via telephone. If guests own a sit ski and require assistance from the Car Park to the slope we are happy to assist with the transport and movement of this equipment too. Alternatively, call 1300 303 659 if you have any questions.

Day Visitors
All the carparks on Mt Buller are numbered from 1 – 11.  When departing you will need to return to your carpark either via the Northside Express Chairlift to Horse Hill or via the carpark shuttles from the Village Square to all carparks.

Overnight Visitors
When you are leaving Mt Buller after an overnight stay you need to return the Mt Buller car parks via the ride share service.

Driving with snow on your vehicle is dangerous - clear it off! Make sure you clear ALL snow from your vehicle - you can be hit with a hefty fine and loss of demerit points for driving with snow on the roof of your vehicle. It is a danger and a hazard for several reasons.

  • Behind the Mansfield-Mt Buller Buslines depot in Mansfield, or
  • The Mirimbah Riverside car park (at the base of the mountain) - $8 per pay or $48 per week, payable on exiting the car park
