International Mountain Day Festival 2026

Spend three days getting to know the mountain a little better, with guided ecology walks, sunset drinks and shared meals. Mt Buller’s International Mountain Day celebrations bring together people who love the mountains and want to understand the landscapes that make them special. The 2026 theme, “Mountain pastoralists: Sustaining rangelands, knowledge and livelihoods”, recognises the people whose knowledge and care help sustain mountain environments.

Explore the mountain’s ecology with guided walks through alpine landscapes, with plenty of opportunities to pause, take in the views and share a meal.
The 2026 theme celebrates mountain pastoralists, whose Indigenous and local knowledge helps sustain healthy soils, vegetation, water cycles and wildlife habitats while supporting mountain communities.
Friday 11 December: Meet at the Summit Car Park for a 5:30pm departure. Walk to the Fireman’s Hut for drinks at sunset.
Saturday 12 December: Start with a village welcome, coffee and morning tea. Join a guided ecology walk down Klingsborns to Thank Christ Corner, then up McLachlan’s Ridge to the Mt Buller Summit. Enjoy drinks on Koflers Deck before a barbecue dinner and planned keynote talk at Tirol Lodge.
Sunday 13 December: Start with breakfast at Spurs, with the time to be confirmed. A guided ecology walk follows the Summit Nature Walk from 10am to noon, finishing at Arlberg.
