Attention Mt Buller aeriaquatic daredevils: the most prestigious, totally legitimate, 100% definitely-sanctioned event in the global pond skim calendar is back. It's time for the Pond Skim National Championships - the jewel in the crown of the Federation International de Pond Skim (FIPS) calendar.
The FIPS technical delegates are already here, clipboard in hand, wearing sunglasses indoors and muttering about "homologation requirements" and “no fluoro wax”. They've promised to crack down this year on illegal propulsion devices, politically motivated costumes, and "excessive interpretive dance" on approach. So naturally, we expect MORE of all of those things.
This is where the Mt Buller community shines - one glorious day where staff, locals, and visiting troublemakers strap on skis or boards, hurl themselves at a suspiciously frigid body of water, and hope the judges (and the laws of physics) are in a generous mood. Costumes are mandatory in spirit (if not in the actual rulebook), so start brainstorming now.

Current hot tips from the FIPS global circuit:
Remember: while this is technically the National Champs, it's really just an excuse for everyone at Mt Buller to dress up, act out, and pretend we're all part of a high-stakes, high-glamour, high-splash sport destined for the IOC's "someday maybe" pile. IE anyone can give it a go. Kids included.
This may be your only chance to make a big splash this season so start prepping now. Get those skimpressive costumes ready.
Long live the skim.

The judging is based a little on your jump and choreography, but the majority of the score comes from the costume. The more timely and topical the better. So get cracking on your outfits and contraptions.
