Mt Buller, Australia: Buller X organisers confirmed today the elite freeride event would not be staged this winter due to conditions being unsuitable for a safe competition.
Buller X goes ahead only if and when the conditions line up to enable the athletes to ski and ride the steep, technical course. The event demands a combination of good quality cover, sufficient snowpack and warm bluebird weather conditions to provide consistent snow top to bottom in the challenging zone off Mt Buller’s summit.
Event founder and director Tony “Harro” Harrington has been sharing weekly updates and assessing the course with the Mt Buller mountain operations and Ski Patrol teams and was disappointed to confirm the decision this week, “We’ve had an incredible season at Mt Buller with bumper snowfall and one of the deepest winters in over a decade so we were hopeful of getting the event off this year, like we did in 2017.”
Harro explains, “Although there has been plenty of snow we haven’t had the traditional warming we usually see in late September, and the chutes have stayed very firm and icy. To hold Buller X and give the athletes the opportunity to ride the whole zone creatively and safely we need the snowpack to ‘corn’ up and soften and a window of high pressure with a few sunny days in a row - but that’s not happened. We are still getting sub-zero nights, low humidity and even some late snow still staying in the forecast which has stopped us calling the event on.”
The line up for 2018 Buller X included the following skiers and boarders all eager to take on the challenge –
|
Hannah Trigger (SNB) Cam Bolton (SNB) Allie Coates (SNB) Sabrina Fiebig (SNB) Flynn Medson (SNB) Nathan Louis (SNB) |
Mitchell Reeves (SKI) Ryan Cooke (SKI) Ezequiel Usle (SKI) Griffin Dunne (SKI) Danny Foster (SKI) |
The athletes will wait patiently until next winter and to see if and when the mountain will call the day for a 2019 event.
Buller X thanks all the event partners for their support and for being part of carving out a world-class freeride event in Australia.
Thanks to Mt Buller, Volkl, Marker, Giro, XTM, Teton Gravity Research, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Mountainsafe, The Photo Shop Mt Buller and Buller X brew.
