Silly season is well and truly underway at Mt Buller, with events like FreeBOM presented by Chillfactor Magazine, the ABOM Moguls Challenge and ‘80s Day already crossed off the calendar. The best is yet to come though, with the Corona Extra Pond Skim National Championships taking place on Saturday, September 19.
Only in its second year, the “Pond Skim” has already cemented its place as one of the most popular and fun events of the season. Drawing an enthusiastic crowd and close to 100 competitors in 2014, this year’s competition is bound to draw even wackier entrants attempting to “skim” their way across a 30 metre, custom built pond on Bourke St.
A star studded celebrity panel will also return, with comedian Peter Helliar in line to help determine the winner based on criteria including: longest Skim, style and of course best costume.
2014 champion, Joe Corcoran who took the win after front-flipping out of the end of the pond is preparing to defend his title.
“Innovation is the key to winning the Pond Skim – I’m not going to rest on my laurels and have been preparing for this event all winter. I don’t just want to be the first person ever to win the Pond Skim National Championships; I want to be the first person ever to win it consecutively. Pond skimming is my life now.” Corcoran said.
With winners taking home up to $1000 cash and even a 2016 Mt Buller Season Membership, this event is not to be missed. And the fun doesn’t stop when the skimming ceases, the party continues with après ski on Bourke St at the Corona Beer Garden. Then kick on into the evening at the official Corona Extra Pond Skim Après party from 7pm at Moosehead Bar & Bistro.
