Mt Buller isn’t letting limited snow cover get in the way of a great time for the long weekend celebrations marking the start of the 2023 snow season.
The resort is one of very few in the country offering skiing and boarding this weekend thanks to the huge stockpiles of snowmaking that have been stacking up since early May.
“The all-weather snow factories on Mt Buller have been working overtime building mountains of precious snow on our Bourke Street ski run and the toboggan slope while we wait for the first big storm of the season,” explains Buller Ski Lifts General Manager Noel Landry. “The investment in snowmaking is a critical one for all the operators in our resort and we’re thankful to be sliding, tobogganing and snowball throwing on what we have up here so far.”
Mt Buller is scheduled to roll three lifts for the long weekend; Bourke Street Express, the beginner carpet and sightseeing on the Northside Express up to Spurs Café.
The first chair rolls on Bourke Street at 8.30am on Saturday and locals are eager to scan their passes for that first ride.
The toboggan park in the village has a towering pile of snowmaking ready for kids, and big kids, to get in some warm up toboggan laps.
The village is buzzing and visitors are starting to arrive on the mountain with the focus very much on après plans, meeting Winter Olympian heros, selfies with sled dogs and fitting in a walk to the summit before the snow kicks in. Late nights in Kooroora nightclub and DJ sets are also high on the ‘to do’ list for many guests.
New in the resort this winter is a special sculpture of local personality and legend Hans Grimus, famed for his hospitality at Pension Grimus. The community initiative is to be officially unveiled to the public on Sunday morning.
Mt Buller has also introduced new automated lift pass collection points enabling skiers and boarders to scan a code and collect their “B-TAGs” 24/7 from the pick up boxes in the village square and at Northside Express chairlift load station. The pick up boxes allow skiers and boarders to skip the ticket window wait and hit the slopes.
