Mt Buller is excited to be hosting the largest snowsports event of its type in the Southern Hemisphere. We welcome the 2023 Mogul Ski World Victorian Interschools Snowsport Championships to Mt Buller. The official opening ceremony will start with a bang on Monday 21 August at the fireworks show, as Mt Buller’s Village Square fills with the excitement of hundreds of students from across the state.
“We are all thrilled to be running the Interschools events again at Mt Buller, the birthplace of the competition in 1958. It started when only 8 students made up just 2 teams, now look where it is today with over 3000 students taking part!” said Event Manager David Speirs. “It’s fabulous to see the level of participation in the championships move back to be almost at 2019 levels. Many thanks to the Mt Buller mountain operations team for working so hard to create great event sites in what has been a challenging winter for natural and man-made snow.”
There are over 6600 event entries for over 87 races ranging from cross-country on 6 August, through to the major weeklong event of alpine skiing and snowboarding competition starting on 21 August. More than 250 schools across Victoria participate each year. For more details and information about the schedule go here.
Interschools may be a pathway to Olympic dreams for some competitors, but it’s more than just competition. It is about building a lifelong love of Snowsports with friends and family. It also develops skills in perseverance and resilience, especially when many students are taking on what is a new and very different challenge.
A huge thank you and shout-out goes to the incredible Mountain Operations crew, Race and Events Departments. This year’s event has been an extraordinary challenge logistically due to the low snow levels. We have been lucky in recent years with above average snowfalls, but this year has been a lot more lean. Through the hard work, massive effort, hundreds of long hours and early mornings from all of these legends, the Interschools races have been pulled together for a fantastic competition. What they have been able to achieve for the competitors and the race courses is a feat of ingenuity, skill and genius. It truly takes a mountain of people to put on an event of this scale. Give them a thank you when you see them around the mountain.

Mt Buller is looking forward to doing it all again when the 2023 Mogul Ski World Australian Interschools Snowsport Championships come to compete on 5-10 September. The top 6 teams and 20 individuals from the state competitions qualify for this national event.
Good luck to all competing!
