FOUR WHEEL DRIVING
Pack a picnic, your favourite people and hit the road for some country driving as part of your visit. There are plenty of winding roads connecting Mt Buller to Mt Stirling and the beautiful surrounding valleys with jaw-dropping views around every turn.
Whether it’s a short drive from your cosy accommodation in the Mt Buller village to catch the sunset from a special spot, a full-day adventure or you want to set up overnight camp somewhere magical like Pineapple Flat, King Hut or riverside at Sheepyard Flat we invite you to put a little gravel in your travel and discover what’s around that next bend in a dusty road.

EASY DRIVES
- The Circuit Road around Mt Stirling is an easy grade unsealed drive for all-wheel or 4WD vehicles and open from early Nov for summer adventures. The 52km loop offers a sampler of the High Country including stands of tall alpine forest, sweeping views and snowgum plains. A great day trip with side quests off to magical Bindaree falls and a short, 4WD and more challenging, drive up to Craig’s Hut.
- Howqua Track branches off the Mt Buller Road in Merrijig making it a perfect day trip from Mt Buller or a spot to explore on the drive up from Mansfield. It’s a well-made dirt road suitable for AWD vehicles and trailers that takes you approx. 40kms deep into bushland and eventually to the refreshing waters of the Howqua River and Fry’s Hut. Take a fishing rod and try your luck at catching some trout, stop along the way and hike up Mt Timbertop or picnic (or camp) at Sheepyard Flat and experience the high country.
- Mt Buller to Howqua Gap along Corn Hill Road is an easy 4km drive on an unsealed and accessible road in dry weather, perfect for a short adventure starting from the Mt Buller village. Spectacular views back to Little Buller and a mix of woodland makes for a beautiful drive and leads to Howqua Gap where you’ll find a rustic hut and firepits – perfect for a picnic stop. Not suitable for caravans. Continue on to Circuit Road for a full day drive.

INTERMEDIATE/DIFFICULT DRIVES
Mt Buller proudly partners with Ineos Grenadier to make easy work of the more challenging terrain across our ski area and 4WD trails
- Clear Hills track is the short 2.2km link from the Circuit Road up to Craig’s Hut and is 4WD access only, requiring clearance to handle drainage humps and steep sections. Recovery gear recommended. An iconic high country landmark with superb picnic areas and sweeping regional views.
- Carter’s Road to Circuit Road is a popular 38km drive loved by locals and 4WD tours, starting out easy to Tomahawk Hut and progressing to a moderate/difficult rating up to the Circuit Road. Dry weather access only this route showcases a variety of high country regions in one drive with views to Mansfield, over the King Valley and up into grassy plains and snowgums with plenty of historic alpine huts along the route.
