Road Cycling
Take on one of Victoria’s great alpine road climbs. The Mt Buller Tourist Road rises from Mirimbah to the Mt Buller Village through mountain ash forest, sweeping bends and wide High Country views.
It is a beautiful ride, a serious challenge and one very satisfying way to reach the top.
The Climb
The Mt Buller climb covers 16km and gains 921 metres in elevation. The average gradient is 6%, with steeper sections reaching 13%.
The road climbs steadily through the forest before the bends tighten and the gradient lifts on the approach to the village. Pace yourself, settle into the rhythm and save something for the final kilometres.
At the top, take a breather and enjoy the views. You earned them.
While You’re Up Here
You have made it to the top, so why rush back down? Take in the alpine views from the Northside Express sightseeing chairlift or climb your way across the Mt Buller Summit with RockWire.
Both experiences operate on selected days, giving you another reason to rest the legs and spend a little longer on the mountain.
The Descent
The return to Mirimbah serves up 16km of flowing alpine road, but the work is not over yet. Control your speed, ride within your ability and allow plenty of room for corners, traffic and changing road conditions.
Check your brakes before setting off and remember that mountain weather can make the descent considerably colder than the climb.
Plan Your Route
The classic ride starts at Mirimbah and follows the Mt Buller Tourist Road to the village. You can return along the same road or include the climb as part of a longer High Country route.
Check your distance, elevation and turnaround time before leaving, particularly if you are connecting with surrounding roads.
Take On Seven Peaks
Ready for another climb? Mt Buller is one of the seven Victorian alpine ascents included in the 7 Peaks Alpine Ascent Challenge.
Each peak brings a different mix of distance, gradient and scenery, giving keen riders plenty of reasons to explore the Victorian High Country throughout summer.
