UPDATE - BULLER X HAS NOT GONE AHEAD FOR 2018 DUE TO UNSUITABLE SNOW CONDITIONS.
Buller X is a unique and extreme event that is only held if and when the right conditions align (some day in September). Held in the chutes off the summit of Mt Buller the event is challenging, awe-inspiring and exciting for everyone who competes and spectates.
Buller X blazed onto the Australian freeride scene in September 2017 when 16 elite skiers and boarders from around the country took on the challenge of Mt Buller’s steep and treacherous chutes in a unique big mountain competition.
This year the event add an international flavour by inviting a handful of top-notch internationals to try their skills down under.
The line up remains small and will be hand picked with a total of 10 skiers and 10 boarders chosen to compete in the 2018 event with automatic entry given to the top two placed skiers and snowboarders from 2017.
Last year’s winners Coen Bennie-Faull and Nate Johnstone earned the distinction of filming with the acclaimed adventure and action production house Teton Gravity Research in the majestic Teton Range at Jackson Hole Wyoming. This year they defend their title along with second placegetters Australian snowboarder Ryan Tiene and skier Edward Casey.
“The one-day event is an incredible display of Australia’s rich freeride talent. Myself and the judging panel were blown away by the lines the athletes produced for the first ever Buller X, and we can’t wait to see what the athletes pull out for this year’s event,” said event founder and director Tony “Harro” Harrington.
The Chutes are unforgiving. It’s all about reading the mountain, picking your line, working within your abilities and keeping your head on steep terrain to showcase what you can do. This is the ultimate in mountain craft, technical and deft freeriding.
A handful of athletes are chosen representing Australia, New Zealand and the rest of the world.
Come September the weather, temperature and snow pack depth traditionally align to create suitable snow surface conditions for the event to go ahead.
We have a good idea about 7 days before this will happen, and by 3 days out we can safely assume on if the event will be a GO or not.
