As the calendar officially rolled into summer last weekend Mt Buller and Mt Stirling looked like they missed the memo, with snow falling and temperatures well into sub-zero ranges over the weekend. Significant snow fell on Sunday evening with Monday's snow depths reported at 15cms!
Mountain Manager Nick Reeves captured this moment as he started his day.
The official summer opening weekend was a chilly affair with light snowfall adding a different flavour to the official start of the biking season. When the latest snow melts as expected later this week all gravity and cross country trails are now open for riding. Gloves were a popular accessory on the weekend and so were hot coffee stops up in the Mt Buller village and down at Mirimbah.
"Although dustings of snow are not unusual, this year has seen some snowfall every week so far since the official close of the snow season back in early October. We’d love some more sunny days to enjoy walking and riding on the trails but it’s good to have some moisture and cool temperatures as we brace for a challenging fire season this summer" said Rhylla Morgan who is keen to put her snow reporting duties aside for a few months!
All Terrain Cycles have their summer store open in the Mt Buller Village with a good range of rental bikes and repairs available. Shannon and the team are on hand with helpful advice, great trail knowledge and offer guided tours and clinics.
Blue Dirt shuttles are operating with single rides available for those doing a lap on the downhill trail and seeking a lift back up or full day passes available including pick ups from down at Mirimbah for riders enjoying the Delatite River Trail all the way down.
Those looking forward to some time on the bike this summer have plenty to look forward to with numerous events for riders of all levels. Mt Buller will again host the Victorian Downhill MTB Series on 18-19 January.
