The Summer Crew Preparing Mt Buller for Winter

2 June 2026

This summer, trail crew have been hard at work and it’s a bit more extreme than your average gardening. The team are part mountain goat, part gardener, bush bashing their way on foot into steep, rocky and remote areas, often running into some creepy crawlies, all whilst battling the summer heat, to get your favourite ski runs ready for winter.

Trail crew and the revegetation crew play an important role in caring for Mt Buller's unique alpine environment, ensuring sustainable management and conservation of over 300 hectares of the alpine backyard that you all love.

Following the Mt Buller Revegetation Management Plan, trail crew work across different terrains, classified into habitat and non-habitat zones. Habitat zones ensure conservation for native species including the mountain pygmy possum, the broad toothed rat and a variety of native plant species that make up alpine shrub lands and bogs. Non-habitat zones can be mowed like your back garden, or pruned like a hedge, just a bit more hard core.

The flora species that make up Mt Buller's diverse ecosystem have evolved to suit cold temperatures and snow; these bushes and scrubs make the perfect landing for snow to settle. Creating an efficient snowpack that stays smooth and stable for over 100 days of skiing.

As trail crew team leader Henry Page sits deep in the boulder field of Federation bowl, looking out upon the picturesque mountains that surround Mt Buller, he explains why he enjoys being a part of the Mt Buller trail crew.

“How could you not love getting to work out here! When it’s a perfect day like this, there's something so unique and exciting about being out in the middle of nowhere, just you and your mates. That's the part of the job I love the most”.

“Look, it is hard work. Walking into some areas that are so secluded from everything can feel a bit sketchy, but that's what makes it so great,” Henry explained.

Henry’s top picks for the upcoming winter season are a great mix. So, when the snow arrives point your skis in the direction of Boggy Creek, this will be great fun for intermediate skiers and riders wanting to tackle the trees. The Bull Run bowl saw a lot of love this summer, for those more advanced skiers and boarders you can carve up Wood Run, Funnel and Sun Valley. With some fresh flurries, Cut 73 and under the Southside Chair runs including Yurredla will be great spots to find some secret stashes. When Federation spins again, Bloody Hell is ready to rip!

Trail crew have covered over 115 hectares of Mt Buller's skiable terrain, removing hazards, pruning habitat and non-habitat zones both manually and via machine and revegetation management to allow for smooth skiing and boarding. Playing an integral role, trail crew and the revegetation team strike the perfect balance between caring for Mt Buller's diverse ecosystem while preparing skiable terrain for the upcoming winter.

Which means for all you keen riders eagerly awaiting the 2026 season to kick off, Mt Buller's terrain has been well cared for this summer and now ready for you to rip this 2026 snow season.
