Buller X is an extreme, freeski competition slated for the steep and rocky “Chutes” off Mt Buller’s summit in August and September this winter. The double-black diamond terrain limits the event to only Australia’s most technical big mountain skiers and has created a huge buzz as the best in the country have put themselves forward to compete.
The Call Up for athletes has seized the interest of Aussie Olympians, hard-core backcountry enthusiasts as well as an exciting line up of lesser known locals. Only 8 will make the final cut. 30 have thrown their hats into the ring.
“I was really excited about this event and am blown away by the response we’ve had to the “Call Up”. Not only do we have serious terrain for this event at Mt Buller - we’ve got a seriously impressive line up of athletes ready to take it on.”
“I’m stoked to see the incredible talent on offer and to hear how fired up everyone is to be involved,” explains Harrington. Call Up contenders include Olympians Anton Grimus and Katya Crema, Watkin McLennan, Coen Bene-Faull, Sam Robertson, Ryley Lucas, Liam Wallis, Tori Hamilton-Wilson, Adam Kroenert and Harrison Mcinnes to name just a few.
The selection of the successful 8 challengers for Buller X goes to a public vote open now. “We’re sure everyone will enjoy voting for their favorite skiers and we figure it will be a nice change from that other voting we are all fed up with right now,” quipped Harrington.
Athlete profiles are posted at www.bullerx.com.au for friends, supporters, family and sponsors to rally behind their preferred entrants. Voting can be done daily until 10 July.
The successful athletes will be chosen based on their abilities, level of public support and a deciding Event Committee vote to choose the best line up for this new and challenging competition.
Buller X takes a leaf from the book of big wave surf events and will be held within a weather window to ensure optimal conditions if and when the event is called on.
The Buller X ‘contenders’ will be announced on 15 July in a celebration at the Ski Club of Victoria at Mt Buller, with headline performer DJ Eddy on stage for an “Extreme” themed party.
