Mt Buller welcomes children from Manyallaluk to the snow for the first time

30 July 2015

Seven children from a remote Northern Territory Aboriginal Community, Manyalluluk, visited Mt Buller this week and saw snow for the first time.

Mt Buller businesses worked together to give the children warm clothing, transport and equipment rental to make it a memorable experience and the excited children embraced the challenge of a “First Timers” lesson at the Mt Buller Ski & Snowboard School.

The children were overjoyed by their first snow experience and thrilled to discover their fingers would not fall off “if they got too cold.”

General Manager of Buller Ski Lifts, Laurie Blampied welcomed the visit and was please the resort was able to support the children.

“We are delighted to have been able to play a part in supporting this first snow experience for a special group of kids who’ve travelled a huge distance to visit Mt Buller. I am sure they will create memories and experiences from this visit that will stay with them for life and Buller Ski Lifts is happy to have been able to help make that happen along with so many other generous community members and businesses. ” Blampied said.

Located roughly 500kms south east of Darwin, life in Manyallaluk is very isolated and means children have little experience outside their remote community. Teacher Stephanie Baker wished to expand the children’s horizons through a trip to Melbourne, providing them with a story to tell for the rest of their lives. Beyond their visit to Mt Buller, the children also spent time at the Melbourne Zoo and saw a live production of “The Lion King.” The trip was largely funded through fundraising efforts and spanned 10 days throughout the end of July and early August.
