Mt Buller welcomes South Australian athletes

18 July 2016

Mt Buller is preparing to play host to hundreds of school snowsports enthusiasts on 17-22 July, when the South Australian Schools Snowsports event hits the mountain.

Mt Buller has hosted the week for South Australian schools since 1997, and for the first time in 2016 the South Australian Schools Snowsports will be run by the organisation responsible for hosting both the Victorian and Australian Interschools, the Buller Interschools Association (BIA).

Event Manager David Speirs brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the schools snowsports space, and said the event is focused on fun in a supportive environment. “We are very much looking forward to welcoming the schools from right across SA for a week full of fun and friendly competition in Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding. Entry is open to all South Australian schools from year one to 12, with competition designed to encourage participation across all levels of age, experience and skill level.”

“With a reputation for providing excellent on-snow events for schools at Mt Buller, the BIA is committed to increasing participation in the South Australian Schools Snowsports week and ensuring all participants have a positive and fun experience. We are hosting the events on Burnt Hut Spur which is arguably the best event site location in Australia for this level of competition. With the Spurs restaurant adjacent to the start area and a long moderate race course it delivers a great event experience for students.”

Participants and their families will enjoy a program of fun on and off the slopes during the South Australian Schools Snowsports event, with a range of extra activities happening across the week including an on-snow welcome BBQ; movie night with a screening of The Will to Fly, which follows the journey of four-time Winter Olympic aerialist Lydia Lassila; a night-time lantern run down the Bourke Street ski run; official awards ceremonies, plus DJ and resort mascots alongside one of the days of competition.
