Snow Arrives at Mt Buller as Winter Countdown Begins

7 May 2026: Mt Buller woke up to the clichéd winter wonderland after a southerly blast swept across the mountain overnight, delivering more than 12cm of fresh snow and crisp temperatures down to -5°C.

Snow continued to pile up through to the evening, coating roads, rooftops and ski runs in white, with flakes even reaching all the way down to Merrijig and the valley. For locals, staff and early visitors, it’s the kind of morning that signals one thing: winter is almost here.

One month to go until the snow season kicks off

The countdown is officially on to Opening Weekend celebrations across the King’s Birthday long weekend from Saturday 6 June, and the excitement around the mountain is building fast.

Tradespeople finishing off summer projects navigated slippery snow-covered roads this morning while snowmaking crews seized the opportunity to test systems in perfect sub-zero conditions.

Mt Buller’s all-weather snow factories have been running since late April, steadily building snow stockpiles to guarantee skiing and snow play from the beginning of the season.
