Season opening - Saturday!

5 June 2025

Mt Buller is fired up for snow, fireworks and mountains of fun as the season officially opens this King’s Birthday long weekend.

We're ready to roll lifts and get snow-lovers skiing and boarding for the season kick off with Bourke Street Express and Bourke Street carpet set to turn from Saturday morning. The Northside Express will carry sightseers to the upper mountain to take in the views.

The weather is lining up perfectly with a sub-zero, wintry snap forecast for the weekend and the forecasters all tipping for snow falling from Friday through the weekend with hopes for heavier falls into Monday. The temperature is expected to drop below freezing for the entire three-day celebration.

Meteorologist Jane Bunn prepares a tailored snow forecast for Mt Buller’s website and her updates increasingly show the potential for huge snowfalls this long weekend.

“We’re seeing a trifecta of conditions aligning that point to significant snowfall – a surge of cold air from the south, a connection to tropical moisture and a ‘cut-off’ low pressure system slowly moving over the south-east of Australia,” Jane explains.

“Saturday and Sunday look to be the main days for huge snowfalls, and it’ll be bitterly cold too so the snow is perfectly dry - this should set us up for a great start to the season. I look forward to telling everyone about the incoming snow in my 7NEWS weather report live from Mt Buller this Friday night when I will be layered up in my warmest ski gear for the cold weather!”

We’re so excited to be welcoming guests for the start of the 2025 snow season this weekend,” said Alan Arthur, General Manager of Mt Buller and Mt Stirling. “It’s exciting to have snow falling on Opening Weekend and it is going to make the alpine festivities feel even more special.

Noel Landry, General Manager of Buller Ski Lifts, and his team are ready to open the ski area, “Bourke Street run will be ready for skiers and snowboarders and our team is pumped up to see a good snowy forecast and low temperatures for the season start” he added.

The friendly instructors in the Mt Buller Ski & Snowboard School will have the first beginner lessons for the winter starting on Saturday morning with families and kids eager to get in the first classes.

Snow lovers will be glad it’s a long weekend as the resort is cramming in a packed program over the three days including rolling the first chairlift on Saturday morning with Mt Buller’s Ski Patrol - who are celebrating 75 years of service – as well as live music and free family entertainment in the village Saturday afternoon followed by fireworks, après parties around the resort. The festivities will start before the weekend with a sunset après party with DJ set at The Villager on Thursday afternoon for those who can’t wait!

The resort officially switches into winter operations from Friday afternoon when regular vehicle access to the village closes to mark the commencement of the snow season and the winter car parking and shuttle services begin.

Off the slopes the village will be buzzing with cafes and restaurants open, retail stores stocked with the latest gear, souvenirs, fashion and gifts and activities such as the Buller Air Zone, laser target shooting with biathlete and resort ambassador Boris Stanish, the National Alpine Museum open for guests.

Early season is an ideal time for beginners to get a lesson and discover the fun of skiing and snowboarding while enjoying off-peak savings on lift passes and accommodation before the school holidays. Mt Buller’s 6 Day Any Day pass is a flexible option to lock in ski days with flexibility to ride on any day of the 2025 season. Many accommodation houses on Mt Buller offer Kids Stay Free packages for children in June, and again in September.

Smart snow lovers plan ahead for a fun long weekend:

  • Reload your B-TAG lift pass and head straight to the lift
  • Pre-purchase resort entry to drive straight up the mountain, no stops
  • Collect wheel chains in Mansfield
  • Download the Mt Buller APP for a mountain of info in your pocket
