Mt Buller has officially reopened the Australian Epic Trail, a landmark addition to the mountain’s trail network and a ride that has already earned its reputation as the jewel in the crown.
Stretching across 46km of alpine terrain, the Australian Epic Trail is the first IMBA accredited trails in the Southern Hemisphere, and the first long distance mountain bike trail built entirely within the Australian Alpine landscape. Rated black difficulty, this is a ride defined by its length, elevation and physical commitment. A big, beautiful challenge designed for riders who are ready to earn it.

“This trail has taken an enormous amount of work to bring to life,” said Andre Philbrick, Resort Operations and Patrol Manager for Mt Stirling at Alpine Resorts Victoria. “The Mt Buller and Mt Stirling operational teams have cleared fallen trees, prepared the surface and brought the trail up to standard for riders ready to take on the adventure.”
Despite what you may hear, this is not a downhill trail. Riders will still clock around 1000 metres of climbing, and that effort is very much part of the reward. The climbs make every descent feel sweeter and every moment on the bike more satisfying.
The journey begins with an easy roll through Mt Buller Village before linking into a mix of classic trails that gradually pull you deeper into the mountain. As you head toward Howqua Gap, the ride starts to sink its teeth in, serving up long climbs, open ridgelines and sweeping High Country views that remind you just how far away from everyday riding you are.
One of the defining tests is the Stonefly climb, a sustained grind that will have legs burning and lungs working. It is tough, no doubt about it, but it sets the tone for the adventure ahead and makes what follows well worth the effort.
From higher elevations, the trail opens up into flowing descents where the alpine environment truly shines. Riders weave through stands of woolybutt trees with open views that stretches across the landscape and invite you to pause, breathe and take it all in.
The final stretch is where everything comes together. Long, winding descents invite riders to settle into the rhythm and let the trail do the talking, finishing with playful turns and pure flow, a finish guaranteed to leave a grin on tired faces. Keep an eye out for the iconic ENJOY log along the way.

This is a remote alpine experience, and preparation is essential. Riders should be fully self-sufficient, carrying enough water, food and tools to manage changing conditions.
Pack water, snacks, warm layers and a rain jacket, as weather in the alpine environment can change quickly. A spare tube, derailleur and basic repair kit are strongly recommended. There are huts along the route that offer natural stopping points for refueling, recovery and soaking in sweeping alpine views.
