All vehicles visiting Mt Buller or Mt Stirling MUST carry diamond pattern wheel chains every day of the declared snow season.
You can rent wheel chains for your trip from local stores, including Buller Sports Mansfield.
Staff and signage will inform you during the ascent on the Mt Buller road if you need to fit chains.
Spider chains, ladder chains and wheel socks do not meet the requirements for resort entry.
What are Wheel Chains?
Wheel chains are fitted around your vehicle’s tires to provide extra grip on snowy or icy roads.
You do not need to fit chains as soon as you reach Mirimbah. Carry them in your vehicle and only fit them when directed by road signage or a Resort Management officer.
Use a designated chain fitting bay and make sure you know how to fit your chains before travelling. If you are hiring chains, ask the rental team to show you how they work and confirm which tyres they should be fitted to.

Where can I rent Wheel Chains?
Wheel chains can be hired from several locations on the way to Mt Buller. Online bookings are currently unavailable due to high demand for different chain sizes.

When do I fit wheel chains?
During the declared snow season*, diamond pattern wheel chains must be carried in your car from Mirimbah onwards.
Only fit chains to your tires when directed by road signage or a Resort Management officer, using a designated chain fitting bay. Make sure you know how to fit them before travelling.
*The declared snow season usually runs from the King’s Birthday Weekend until the first weekend of October.
Note: Trailers cannot be towed when wheel chains are required.
OFF MOUNTAIN PARKING
You can park off mountain and catch a bus from Mansfield or Mirimbah to the Mt Buller Village. You don't need chains if you park off mountain.
You may still need a Ride Share to transfer your luggage to your accommodation, depending on the service you book, and location of your accommodation.

- It is a good idea to practice putting on wheel chains before heading up the mountain. See our handy video guide on how to fit chains. Each set of chains can work slightly differently, so it is important you know how to fit your own.
- You sure do! Drivers of diesel vehicles are should fill with alpine diesel from a local service station at Mansfield, or add a diesel anti-gel cold weather additive to their fuel tank to reduce the risk of freezing. In very cold conditions diesel engines can freeze and may not start.
- A small number of cars cannot fit chains in accordance with the vehicle’s user manual. Please check your manufacturers guidelines before hiring chains. If your car cannot fit chains, you will need to organise alternative transport to Mt Buller, such as the Village Express on weekends, private transfer, or catching a bus.
- You do not need to carry wheel chains if you are catching the Village Express or parking off mountain. One of the benefits of this service is you don’t need to drive the mountain road - the professional driver will take you safely to the village. You will still need Resort Entry however, so make sure you book that online and print your dashboard pass ahead of time for a smooth arrival.
- You can rent wheel chains at many stores on the way to Mt Buller, including Mansfield, Merrijig or Mirimbah. Find specific locations to rent chains here. You must be carrying chains in your car by the time you pass the Mt Buller Mirimbah entry gate.
